Very interesting! The 2012 International Coach Federation (ICF) Global Coaching Study Executive Summary put together by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) has been released and paints a mostly rosy picture of the coaching profession! A few highlights:

It was designed to be one of the most ambitious pieces of industry research ever conducted on the field of professional coaching. A primary goal was to engage with as many coaches as possible on a worldwide basis, thus providing an up-to- date picture of the profession to help meet the challenges ahead.

The ICF by the end of 2011 showed 19,000 members. The survey was conducted over 6 months, and received 12,133 valid responses. Responses were received from professional coaches in 117 countries. Over 4,400 valid responses were received from non-ICF members. More than 7,700 ICF members responded to the survey. The largest number (3,565) were from North America.

From the available data, it is hereby estimated that there are presently in the region of 47,500 professional coaches worldwide.

When the report got to the part about average annual revenue, I was shocked at how low the numbers were. I suppose the results would have been vastly different if the survey was only conducted on Executive or Business Coaches. Most of the Executive Coaches I know are generating six figure revenues annually, but this report states that in North America the Average annual revenue is $50,400. Then the next page indicates that North America’s total annual revenues from coaching exceeds $700 million (and global total annual revenues are nearly $2 billion).

The following are the key themes to emerge from the 2012 ICF Global Coaching Study indicators reviewed in this summary report:
• The profession appears to be growing, with an estimated 47,500 professional coaches generating close to $2 billion (USD) in annual revenue/income.
• The profession remains concentrated in the higher-income regions of North America, Western Europe and Oceania. Collectively, these regions contain more than three in four coaches, well exceeding the 11% share of global population living in these regions.
• Despite the critical mass of coaches found in the higher-income regions, nonetheless, the evidence from the study indicates faster growth in coaching has emerged in markets outside these regions, such as in Latin America and the Caribbean.
• Coaches are looking confidently to the future, with expectations over the next 12 months of increasing demand (clients and sessions) leading to growth in annual revenue and income from coaching.
• Key issues for the future include tackling obstacles such as untrained individuals who call themselves coaches; availing of opportunities to increase awareness of coaching benefits; and answering the question of whether coaching should be regulated.

A while back I posted the preliminary report that the Sherpa folks released, and now that they’ve concluded their annual research survey they’ve released the latest survey on Executive Coaching. As they say, “Executive coaching has arrived. It occupies a place as a permanent fixture in the modern organization. The perceived value and the credibility of coaching are at all-time highs.” They report a new surge in coaching-based programs for teams, and the report also explores regulation and licensing for coaches as well as communication technology. The good news is, “Over eighty percent see the credibility of coaching as ‘high’ or ‘very high’.”

The report is housed at the Library of Professional Coaching and you can access the full report here!

What a lovely surprise. Apparently my blog has been added to the Executive Coaching listing on Alltop! Does this mean people are actually reading what I write? Cool!

Apparently you can add this Alltop feed to your own MyAlltop page, and I’m assuming if you have your own MyAlltop page, you’ll know how to do that, because I sure don’t. Maybe someone with knowledge can post instructions below for others who might want to add the feed?

If you know of other great Executive Coaching blog sites and want to submit them to Alltop, you can do so here: Alltop submission page: http://alltop.com/submission/

2011 is bringing enormous changes to the Library of Professional Coaching (LPC), and new opportunities for YOU! Please share with us your reactions to the news below, and please feel free to forward this note on to whomever you think would appreciate the chance to participate with the Library of Professional Coaching either as a reader, content contributor, or advertising sponsor.

BIG CHANGES!

1. As a result of independent research we’ve conducted, we are planning to make the library available to the public with NO SUBSCRIBER FEES! Those who come to our website will no longer need to join for a day, a month, or a year to access the entire collection. As someone wanting to access material from our library, you will no longer need to sign up and enter a lot of data about yourself before you can grab a few articles. You will be able to have it all for free — no catch! Tell all your friends! Also, if you have written high-caliber articles that fit in the categories of the Library, your articles will gain much more exposure with these new changes, so consider submitting your relevant articles to the Library now.
2. In order to build and sustain this FREE LIBRARY we are moving to a sponsor-based model. As is now the case with many popular websites, we are recruiting sponsors who will be able to place their logos, as well as information about their services/resources and links to their own website on the highly optimized Library website. Furthermore, these sponsor placements will be targeted to specific categories of the library that are directly relevant to the services/resources being offered by the sponsor. We believe that this targeting of sponsor visibility, coupled with the popularity of the Library (often as many as 1,000 hits per day), will make sponsorship an attractive offer for many individuals and organizations that are associated with the field of professional coaching.
3. We have a growing collection of articles and books in the Library. We currently have over 185 articles in 29 categories, and two full books: Men of Autumn, and Seal the Deal! We are adding new content all the time, so if you haven’t been by lately, come on in and check it out.

The full collection will now be MUCH easier to access. We’ve heard your requests to simplify, and soon you will be able to find, read, and download the articles with minimal clicks and no data entry!

WE NEED YOU!

In order to be able to make these major changes, we will be moving the entire library to a new platform, since the current platform will not support these changes. This is why we need your help!

We will need financial assistance to support these changes. As you know, the Library has been a labor of love that we have personally been financing for the last 3 years. We are at a critical decision-point, and if the Library is to flourish in the near future with the exciting changes mentioned here, financial capital is required. We need to raise $2000 by July 1 in order to make these key changes. Will you be a founding sponsor? Do you know of anyone who would like the extra exposure for their organization or program? Details are below.

Sponsorship Opportunity
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To support the operating costs of the Library itself, we are offering the following sponsorship rates to individuals and organizations that want to take advantage of and leverage the visibility of our fabulously search-engine-optimized site. You’ll get lots of exposure targeted to the categories that are most directly linked to your specific area of expertise and interest.
Just pick one of the four advertising sponsorships aligned with the 29 categories of the Library’s content. The breakdown is below, and we’d be happy to customize an alternative solution for you if none of these appeal to you or your organization:
Category Sponsorship Options:
Silver – your logo ad on one category of your choice for up to 3 months:   $75
Gold – your logo ad on one category of your choice for up to 6 months: $125
Platinum – your logo ad on one category of your choice for up to 1year: $200
Diamond – your logo ad on the home page and also on up to four category pages for 1 year:   $800
Press RELEASE:                                                 CONTACT:
October 27, 2009                                                Adriana Bobinchock
McLEAN HOSPITAL LAUNCHES FIRST INSTITUTE OF COACHING
Belmont, MA—With an extraordinary $2 million gift from the Harnisch Foundation, McLean Hospital recently launched the Institute of Coaching, the first-of-its-kind center for coaching-related research, practice and education. The goal of the center is to advance excellence in research and practice within the bourgeoning field of coaching.
Coaching is a professional practice designed to optimize human potential and performance in diverse arenas including leadership, healthcare and public service. According to Institute Director Carol Kauffman, PhD, a psychologist at McLean and a professional coach, “coaching is a remarkable change process that has often been thought of as a self-help method without established best practices. The goal of the Institute is to provide a solid scientific foundation of coaching based on good science, good research and good practice. Evidence-based coaching will transform the field by giving coaches and clients more and better choices of best practices.”
The Institute will advance the field of coaching through five centers of excellence, including research, education, applied positive psychology, health coaching and executive and leadership coaching. The Harnisch Fund for Coaching, established with a $2 million gift, will fuel coaching-related research by awarding grants for high-quality scientific coaching studies. The Institute’s research center will also disseminate empirically supported best practices, including peer-reviewed studies.
Ruth Ann Harnisch, a philanthropist and certified professional coach, chose to fund coaching research at McLean after listening to the stories of researchers at the first-ever International Coaching Research Forum organized by Kauffman in 2008. “They talked about the challenges they faced as serious academics attempting to do peer-reviewed, respected coaching research. It became clear to me that a respectable academic home for coaching would be a game-changer for the field,” she said.
Establishing the Institute at the world-renowned, Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital was a good fit, according to Harnisch. Known for its cutting-edge research and world-class professionals, McLean has been studying and practicing coaching-related disciplines for years. “There is a growing interest in positive psychology, of which coaching is an integral part,” said Philip Levendusky, PhD, director of Psychology, at McLean. “Increasing evidence shows that coaching can have a positive impact on healthcare delivery in terms of lifestyle changes, medication compliance and a host of other changes that reap big rewards for patients and the healthcare system. In her gift to establish the Institute of Coaching, Ruth Ann Harnisch has made a significant commitment to the coaching profession and to improving the lives of individuals.”
U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks McLean Hospital the nation’s top psychiatric hospital. McLean is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and a member of Partners HealthCare. For more information about McLean Hospital, visit www.mclean.harvard.edu.
