Then you’ve gotta know Jeremy Robinson. He’s one of a team of authors who wrote the book Becoming an Exceptional Executive Coach! Use your knowledge, experience and intuition to help leaders excel, which is featured in the Library of Professional Coaching, where you can access a sample chapter and then click through to buy your own copy.

Jeremy also was a featured Leading Coach on a recent Leading Coaches’ Community Mastermind call, and he share with us 29 points for being an exceptional executive coach. The first few are posted below, and you can access the rest as well as the recording from that call at the Clubhouse!

Jeremy Robinson’s top ten (well, a few more than ten):

1. Have a point of view. The coach with a hypothesis about what’s going on his Client’s life is a hundred times more useful than that coach who only asks questions.

2. Ask good questions. After that, don’t try to ask better questions. Remember better is the enemy of good.

3. The most wonderful sound of good coaching has a baseline of silence. Always be prepared to self-regulate and go silent.

4. Be prepared to punctuate meaningful remarks of your Client and yourself with silence.

5. Most coaches over talk.

6. Be clear about who the Client is- is it the person in front of you or the organization? Clarity about who the Client is makes for the best boundaries in coaching. Good boundaries make coaching possible.

7. Never argue with your Client. Never. Instead- influence.

8. Always have a teachable point of view and always be prepared to have another teachable point of view in your back pocket if the first one flops with your Client.

9. Speak the language of your Client in terms of her vocabulary. You don’t have to be a content expert in what your Client does, but you do need to know the vocabulary of your Client’s world.

10. Great coaching is about going from having a strong sense of self and big presence to no ego and completely merging with the Client- all in a nano-second.

11. Coaching is always about getting results. If you’re going for insights vs. results you’re on the wrong train.

12. Be wary of Clients who are great talkers. A lot of the talking that Clients do is propaganda. Yada YADA YADA. So what.

13. Always keep your ears and eyes on the Clients’ behavior. How is she behaving? What’s changing or not changing?

Every year, Sherpa conducts an executive coaching survey. The preliminary report is available at the Library of Professional Coaching, and we’ll post the full report soon!

Coaching takes many forms. In this, our seventh annual survey, to refine the information coaches provide us, we made a distinction between executive coaches, those focused on behavior, and business coaches, who concentrate on skills. This new division presents the clearest picture ever of coaching around the world. In years to come, this will allow more precise measurement of trends in both executive and business coaching.

More, more, more. Last, year, most coaches were optimistic about demand for their services. This year, clients are joining in their optimism. Seven out of ten executive coaches and those who hire them say demand is going up. Life and personal coaches are optimistic, eight to two. In early returns, every buyer of coaching services sees demand going up in the next year.

In recent years, managers and executives have been learning coaching skills. The philosophy of coaching is spreading in scope and becoming part of many leadership training programs.

Over one third of respondents already have significant programs in place to teach coaching skills to managers and executives, while another one in five have programs in startup or design mode.

More than one in four have coaching- based programs in place for teams, while an additional one in five have programs in startup or design mode. In our full report, we’ll break this out across company size, type, geographic location or any other way we can, and present any significant findings. In years to come, we’ll stay on top of trends in this area.

Two years ago, the number of people who received coaching as part of routine leadership development constituted a majority for the very first time. This year, the trend continues, as the majority of coaching is designed for improvement rather than correction or transition. Those who receive coaching for a specific problem or to ease a transition stand even, at around twenty percent each.

The following excerpt was from a larger article by my dear friend and colleague, Wendy Capland called The Business Case for Coaching which you can read in full here: http://libraryofprofessionalcoaching.com/research/the-business-case-for-coaching/

The work of effective coaching within organizations involves unleashing the human spirit and expanding people’s capacity to stretch and grow beyond self-limiting boundaries. Coaching should not start with goal setting and problem solving, but rather with exploring the underlying concepts or mental models that a person relies on for meaning in their personal and professional lives. What assumptions and beliefs determine behavior? The truly effective coach knows that you can’t solve a problem before you know what the problem really is, and you can’t know what the problem really is unless the person you are coaching has permission and authority to speak with candor and forthrightness.

Before focusing on performance issues, a masterful coach guides those involved through the exploration process, helping to identify openings and opportunities where there may have been blind spots and failures. He or she helps clarify what really matters to the person being coached. Together, they seek to align personal and organizational goals. Only then can there be commitment to right action within the context of the organizational culture and business reality.

Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee in their book Primal Leadership (Harvard Business School Press 2002) point out that despite the commonly held belief that every leader needs to be a good coach, they exhibit this style least often. In high-pressure situations, leaders say they “don’t have the time” for coaching. Yet the evidence from the studies is clear. Effective leadership coaching not only develops better leaders; it improves productivity substantially – even exponentially, in some instances.

We are coming to the end of the first of three weeks of Summit sessions and the reaction from the Business and Executive Coaches from 46 countries in attendance has been immense. We have only had 5 of the 28 sessions so far, yet coaches are already saying the return they have gained has far outweighed the investment of money and more importantly time.

Just a small selection of the initial comments include:

“OUTSTANDING! Best hour I have spent in a long time. Very energized and thinking BIG!
Jim Riviello, Philadelphia

“Very impressed with the session from Michael Port. The information was practical and most of all do-able. If this is the beginning of the summit, then we are in for a great & productive learning curve. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.”
Sandy Fuller, Brisbane

“Incredible presentation by a marketing Master. Values driven relationship building with the highest integrity focused on the client. In deepest gratitude for your being fully expressed approach.”
Dr. Maynard Brusman, California

“Michael’s session was great! It was pacey and packed with useful strategies and pointers. I felt very energised at the end and full of ideas about what I need to do to next. The time flew by without me even noticing it”.
Jeanette Schulte, Berlin

“A really worthwhile interactive session, with Marshall on excellent form.”
Tony Whittle, Buckinghamshire

“Michael is a talented and outstanding presenter with style , solid and pragmatic substance in his contents. There were many takeaways….although my time was 5am in the morning it has been worth it”
Lydia Goh – Executive Coach, Singapore

“The first session was excellent! Great information….”
Denver Hudson, Indiana

“The presentation was excellent, chuck full of valuable information”
CB Bowman, New Jersey

“Really great talk- he covered a lot in such a short amount of time”
Katherine Tulpa, London

“A really good seminar Ben and Marshall was such a lovely man to listen to. Well worth the time and lots of great resources.”
Laura Murphy, Sussex

“I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the “Coaching for Behavioral Change” webinar. Marshall Goldsmith was inspirational. He is clearly very knowledgable. I enjoyed hearing about all the examples from his coaching experience. The tools and applications he shared were practical and effective.”
Gail Basaraba, Calgary

Now, if you haven’t signed up just yet, it’s still not too late to join the sessions and not miss out on the huge value to be gained. The five live sessions you have missed are available as recordings to watch online and also to download so you can catch up in your own time and ensure you don’t miss anything.

To sign up for a ticket is very straightforward and you will gain instant access. Simply click now this link: http://www.bit.ly/summitsignup
